Robert J. Gerberg: Old Style Resumes Hurting Chances of Job Seekers at $50,000+
New York, NY — "Far too many job seekers send out resumes that are hurting their chances," says Robert J. Gerberg, best selling author, in his latest book, The Professional Job Changing System. "They don't realize it of course, but it happens in several ways. The most obvious is revealing liabilities, things like a peaked career, too many job changes, one-company or one-industry experience, age, unrelated titles, age and many more."
"Another common mistake is not making immediately clear the type of position you want and the level at which you expect to contribute. With 30 million resumes in circulation and hundreds of competitors for the really good positions, you cannot expect a decision maker to spend a lot of time trying to figure these things out. Even when you do make it clear, you have at most 20 seconds to show how you would contribute, and that has to be done in a memorable way that the reader can easily understand."
"A lot of resumes just don't have much graphic appeal. They are not eye catching and do not reflect the professional level of the job seeker. Far too many look like millions of others. Increasingly important today, a resume also has to go the extra step and do some thinking for the reader. Going beyond your achievements, you need to identify the skills you used to achieve things, so the reader will easily understand they are transferable to his industry and company. This is enormously important if you want to change industries, appeal to venture capitalists or join a growth firm."
"Last, you need to ask yourself, 'Is my resume dynamic, fast moving and a strong selling document?' In today's market, every line must inspire the reader. Being boring doesn't work! The words have to have some reasonable punch, substance and sparkle. Action-oriented stories go a long way toward making a resume compelling and memorable. This book, available in hardcover nationwide, gives the reader detailed instructions on how to make sure their resume will set them apart and pre-sell them to employers. Remember, an ‘A’ resume isn't just twice as effective as a <B’ resume. It's more like 20 times."
