Robert J. Gerberg: Employer Contact Tricky But Effective for $50,000+ Job Seekers

New York, NY — "We all get direct mail every day. The ones you see again and again are working. Timing is the key. The buyer has to be looking for the product at that moment. It's the same with employers." Robert J. Gerberg, best selling author, makes this point about contacting employers in his latest book, The Professional Job Changing System. "Many people think any unasked for correspondence you send an employer will automatically be thrown away. The experience of our firms says otherwise. But it has to be done right."

"If a good letter or resume reaches an employer at the moment they are looking for your talents, chances are you'll be asked in for an interview. Direct marketing principles apply here. First, nothing happens unless you contact the right person in the right companies. Second, it works best if you make initial contact with a curiosity-arousing letter. Letters usually work better than resumes because they can be more personal and avoid disclosing liabilities. A resume immediately tells the recipient you are looking for a job, but a letter can be about anything. You have more leeway to communicate on a peer-to-peer basis with an interesting "selling proposition."

"Another key principle is that your writing needs to be very clear. You need short sentences backed up by impressive facts that leave the reader thinking, 'This person has done things in the past that I need done right now.' Your letter can be as long as you need, but if you write longer copy you have to watch out for revealing liabilities, becoming redundant or overselling. It's a fine line. It has to grab interest in the first 20 seconds and keep on building that interest."

"Most people will need to send out a large number of contacts, because the timing will be right for only a small percentage of those who get your letter. Think of it as a fast, cost effective way to do research. To uncover the one or two who got your message at the right time, you'll need to go through dozens where the timing just wasn't right. That's okay. This book, available hardcover nationwide in bookstores, tells you precisely what you need to do and gives examples of approaches that worked."
