Advanced Career Technologies Study: Job Seekers Wanting to Switch Industries Need "Industry Hooks"

New York, NY ��� "A lot of people going after jobs at $50,000+ today realize that they need to switch industries because theirs isn't growing. What they don't realize, though, is that their chances of doing that are far smaller if they don't have 'industry hooks.' Best selling author Robert J. Gerberg makes this point in his latest book, The Professional Job Changing System. "They have to take the initiative and show potential employers in other industries the many similarities to their industry and the employer's."

"This book shows people how to do that. You can group your industry options three ways: close industry hooks, medium and far stretch. Close industry hooks are the easiest, where you can point to similar markets, methods of selling or manufacturing processes. Medium won't be so obvious, and you'll have to search for things like similar distribution processes and the importance of engineering. When you make the far stretch comparisons, you are looking for characteristics such as the role of advertising and marketing as it compares to operations, whether it is sales-driven or marketing-driven, common problems, and the role of labor."

"The key thing is, once you have made a convincing case by pointing out to the employer as many similarities as you can identify, having no experience in the industry is no longer such a large obstacle. And if you can supplement that by reading extensively about an industry in its trade publications and in general business publications, so that you know about its major trends and likely directions in the coming years, your case will be that much stronger. Our firms all have the capability to do a lot of time-saving research for people, but anyone can follow the directions in this book, which is available hardcover in bookstores nationwide, to learn more about an industry and company."
