Advanced Career Technologies Survey: Reference Issues Key Problem for 1 in 5 Stalled Job Searches

New York, NY ��� "It's a larger number than most people would expect, but of 2500 people at $50,000+ who'd been job searching over a year, 20% cited reference issues as a key problem." Best selling author Robert J. Gerberg was referring to a survey in his latest book, The Professional Job Changing System, available hardcover in bookstores nationwide.

"There a few classic reference issues and they can all be solved. One is selecting references who are low key and monotone. Their manner can be interpreted as being less than enthusiastic, so it pays to choose references who will be energetic in their praise. Another is having had a disagreement with a previous boss. Here it is important to cultivate other people in the company and customers who will say good things about you, but there are also strategies for communicating directly with the boss, confirming that he or she will not say anything damaging. In some extreme cases people might need to imply legal action because a negative reference is keeping them from earning a living."
