Robert J. Gerberg: Job Seekers With Age Concern Should Use Letters vs Resumes

Many of them would fare better if they used letters or emails for their initial contact instead of a resume." Best selling author Robert J. Gerberg made this interesting point while discussing his latest book, The Professional Job Changing System, available hardcover in bookstores nationwide. "The book instructs people with an age problem on many things they can do to neutralize it. As for using letters, they give people the freedom to focus on anything they like, in this case the future and the ways they can make significant contributions, where a resume by its nature is limiting."

"My newest book was written to teach anyone searching for a job over $50,000 all they need to know and do to be successful. Neutralizing liabilities is part of the first section, where they also learn to identify transferable skills and personal strengths, then develop a communication strategy to make them more marketable. It also teaches people how to appeal to more growth industries and how to set up a realistic action plan. A big part of the preparation is the resume, and they learn how to write a resume that pre-sells them to employers, and why they need more than one resume."

They learn how to find more openings in the published market of ads, boards, employer sites and recruiters that would be right for them. And to get more exposure to the unpublished market, where 50% or more of their opportunities will be, they learn the three basic ways of getting considered before a job matures into the competitive published market. To be successful here they need to follow the directions in the book closely regarding targeted and directed networking, direct employer contact and event-directed initiatives.
