"The average person needs 17 interview opportunities to get just one offer, so you've got to aim for uncovering at least 20 or more opportunities. With so many competitors, you need a lot of contacts to reach that goal. The average person needs to answer 10 times as many ads as they do. And the chance of one recruiter having an opening right for you at the moment you make contact is very small, less than 1 in 100 for most people, so you need to compensate by going to hundreds of recruiters, not just 5 or 6."

"In the unpublished market you'll have far less competition, but the odds there are more about whether a given employer would have a need at the moment you contact them. Again, large numbers will compensate for the fact that 2% or less will be interested. The odds are better when you initiate contact based on events that signal emerging jobs, but you still need large numbers of contacts.
