Advanced Career Technologies Survey: More Job Seekers Making Industry Change, But 87% Limit Selves

New York, NY — "87% of all job seekers at $50,000+ start out restricting themselves to industries where they have past experience, but it doesn't have to be this way," claims Robert J. Gerberg, best selling author, in his latest book, The Professional Job Changing System. "Our studies show that more people are successfully switching industries," he says, "and the reality is that people of all ages can move into exciting new industries."

"Historically people have overrated the barriers and underrated their abilities to move into new areas. Most new jobs are created by small and mid-sized businesses, so people need to explore positions with startups and emerging companies. If you choose the right industries, with more growth opportunities, you'll do better, especially for newer industries that, by their nature, need to hire the best talent from other industries."

"The key is to identify "industry hooks," — characteristics of your industry similar to those of others, things like product lines, distribution channels, the markets they sell to, similar processes, marketing methods, types of selling approaches used, the influence of labor, manufacturing similarities, degree of change and so forth. The more you can point to characteristics of your industry that are similar to those of a prospective employer, the stronger your case will be. Our firms use software that compares hundreds of factors, but anyone can go through the exercise. It's surprising that when you break it down to smaller elements like functions, markets and problems faced, many industries have a lot of similarities. Employers always look for "common ground" when hiring key people."

"Some functions, of course, cut across industry lines more easily than others. Finance, HR, IT and administration present no problem and Sales is often relatively easy. In some manufacturing positions and in service industries requiring specialized knowledge, it is more difficult, but our experience shows it can be done. This book, available in hardcover in bookstores nationwide, tells you how to prepare for switching industries, and gives readers many examples of improbable but successful switches.
